HELENA, Mont. – Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Monica J. Lindeen is proud to announce a record year in recoveries by her office for insurance consumers. Staff at her office returned $5.2 million to Montanans in 2012, making it the largest single-year sum for consumers who had claims wrongfully denied by their insurers.
"When Montanans have a disagreement with their insurance company, they can rest assured they've got experts on their side," said Lindeen. "We work hard every day to make sure insurance companies treat Montanans fairly. I'm proud to have helped Montanans recover more than $5 million they were owed."
All money recovered goes to the Montanans to whom it is owed. In 2011, Lindeen's office returned $4.7 million to consumers, which was a million-dollar increase from 2010 recoveries.
Complaints often come from an insurance company's decision to deny a claim or a misunderstanding of the contract language. Lindeen's staff investigates any issue a consumer may have to ensure they are being treated fairly and the insurer is complying with Montana laws. Montanans can access assistance through an online complaint form available on csi.mt.gov/complaint/. Consumers can also mail, fax, email or call 800-332-6148 to file a complaint.
