Lindeen Recommends Home Insurance Assessment

April 3, 2013

HELENA, Mont. – Spring cleaning? Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Monica J. Lindeen recommends homeowners and renters inventory their insurable possessions in advance of spring storms and summer wildfires. Consumers should conduct a simple inventory to track their belongings and know what they are worth, making insurance decisions much easier.

"I always encourage Montanans to be prepared with the best insurance policies for the worst case scenarios, however the change in seasons is a great time for everyone to evaluate their insurance situation" said Lindeen.

Lindeen serves as the Vice President for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the U.S. system of state-based insurance regulation. The NAIC offers several tools and tips for consumers on its website at www.naic.org. Consumers can download a home inventory checklist from the NAIC website or a free home inventory app for iPhones and Androids to make the inventory an easy task to check off the spring cleaning list. A home inventory is essential in determining how much coverage fits consumers' life situation and ensuring they are adequately protected if they need to file a claim.

Montanans with questions about insurance are welcome to call Lindeen's office at 1-800-332-6148 or visit the website, www.csi.mt.gov, has FAQ's, tips for wildfires and severe weather and home insurance publications. Consumers can download a shopping guide to homeowner's/renter's insurance, a homeowner's insurance rate comparison guide, and a home inventory checklist from Lindeen's website.
