HELENA – The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Consumer Representatives recognized Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Monica J. Lindeen for her work on behalf of insurance consumers at NAIC’s 2013 fall national meeting in Washington, D.C.
Lindeen received the Excellence in Consumer Advocacy award. According to the consumer representatives, “Commissioner Lindeen has played a major role in moving forward the health reform agenda of the NAIC. She has also been a tireless advocate, both at the state and national level, for a meaningful role for state regulators in shaping the future of health insurance regulation.”
The NAIC consumer representatives praised Commissioner Lindeen for her support of a strong consumer voice in deliberations regarding insurance regulation. They especially noted her advocacy on behalf of consumers in enforcing the Affordable Care Act’s market reforms.
Accomplishments the consumer reps cited about Commissioner Lindeen:

- Lindeen has hosted dozens of ACA town hall events to standing room only crowds where hundreds of Montanans have asked ACA questions directly to Lindeen.
- In the last two years, Lindeen’s experts have resolved more than 2,800 consumer complaints and recovered $9.9 million for policyholders that consumers otherwise would not have received.
- In an average year, Lindeen’s office fields approximately 40,000 calls from Montanans experiencing problems with their insurance company.
The NAIC consumer representatives promote consumer activity and participation in the NAIC deliberation process, but they do not represent the NAIC membership. The award presentation was made on Sunday, December 15 at the NAIC/Consumer Liaison Committee program during the NAIC fall meeting.
