Registration requirements

Most of the firms conducting business in Montana are members of the National Association of Securities Dealers (FINRA), the industry's self-regulatory body. Therefore, the Montana Securities Department uses the FINRA's Central Registration Depository to register FINRA member firms. All of the paperwork and fees are submitted to the CRD. If, however, your firm is not an FINRA member firm, send the required materials to the department at the address listed below.

Broker-dealer firms

To register in Montana, the following is required:

  •    Uniform Form BD, in its most recently revised form,
       with original signature and notary.
  •    $200.00 fee. For FINRA firms, make payable to the CRD. 
       Non-FINRA firms make payable to Montana State Auditor.

Broker-dealer representative or salesperson

To register in Montana, the following is required:

  • Uniform Form U-4, in its most recently revised form, with original signature
    $50.00 fee. For FINRA firms, make payable to the CRD. 
    Non-FINRA firms make payable to Montana State Auditor.
  • Proof of passing the Series 63 or 66 exam (links to FINRA info).
  • FINRA approval (Not applicable if person is employed by a non-FINRA firm).
